Manifesto
A few beliefs about design that shape how we work — and what we won’t compromise on.
What we believe
Design is how a product earns its place
Design isn’t the coat of paint at the end. It’s the sequence of decisions that determines whether a product is worth using at all — what it does, for whom, and how it behaves under real conditions.
These are the beliefs we keep coming back to. They’re not a process; they’re the things we won’t trade away when a project gets hard.
Principles
Nine things we hold to
Design is decisions, not decoration
The value is in the choices — what to build, what to cut, how it should behave. Decoration is the last five percent.
Strategy before pixels
We decide what’s worth building and why before we open the design tool. The best interface for the wrong problem is still wrong.
Outcomes over output
A pile of screens isn’t progress. Every decision ties back to a metric that matters to the business.
One team, no handoffs
Strategy, design and systems in the same hands. Nothing gets lost in translation between people who never met.
Clarity is a feature
If people have to think about the interface instead of their task, we’ve failed. Simple is harder, and worth it.
Accessible by default
Designing for the edges makes the middle better. Accessibility isn’t a checklist bolted on at the end.
Ship, measure, learn
Opinions are cheap. We put work in front of real users, watch what happens, and let the evidence settle the argument.
Craft is not a luxury
The details people can’t name are the ones they feel. Care compounds into trust.
Independence protects the work
Self-funded since 2019, we plan on a multi-year view and keep our attention on the work — not utilisation.
How we work
Principles are fixed, the process flexes
We scope the way we work to the problem in front of us — a fixed-scope audit or strategy sprint to get moving, or an embedded partnership when you need design capacity that compounds.
What doesn’t change is the shape: understand the problem, decide what’s worth doing, design it properly, ship it, and learn. See how that plays out across our services.
FAQ
Common questions
What is Biotik’s approach to design?
We treat design as decision-making, not decoration. Strategy comes before pixels, every decision is tied to an outcome, and one senior team carries the work from the first decision to the release — no handoffs.
What does “design is decisions” mean?
It means the value of design is in the choices it makes — what to build, what to cut, how something should behave — not in how it’s decorated. Good design makes hard decisions clear.
Do you follow a fixed process?
We have a clear way of working, but we scope it to the problem rather than forcing every project through the same template. Principles are fixed; the process flexes.
Why does independence matter to the work?
Being independent and self-funded lets us plan on a multi-year horizon, turn down the wrong work, and keep our attention on outcomes and craft rather than utilisation. It protects the quality of what we ship.
